Animals

Nature & Wildlife

Nature & Wildlife

After taking part in workshops, I delved into the path of Nature Photography. I went out not knowing exactly what I wanted as you can’t necessarily predict nature. I took images that stood out to me and thought of ways how I could develop it further. As a beginner Photographer, from shots I’ve taken in the past I found that I liked photographing close-up shots and animals. This is something I want to continue to develop within the project.

Wellhead Park

The Wellhead Park is located in Bourne, it’s a lovely place to have a walk and to see some common wildlife.
I thought that this would be a good place to take some initial shots for my project with a vision to create a brochure for the local residents as the commercial product. With this in mind I knew that I wanted to take some landscape shots of the area and some of the features that make this location stand out amongst the rest.

Contact Sheets

Sample Brochure

Before heading out to the Wellhead I knew I wanted to create a brochure to advertise why people should come to the Wellhead in their local area as the commercial product. This helped me to think what shot types I wanted to give a bit of structure. To create the brochure I researched brochure sizes so that I could create the template in an Affinity Publisher document on my iPad. I hand picked the images that I wanted to showcase that made the location stand out and just started placing them in different locations of the brochure until I was happy with the result. I usually like to work this way rather than planning everything out before doing it, and it’s a quicker way for me to work. I split the pages into different sections after realising the sizing of the chosen images and to break it up to show off the place. I wanted to add some text, if I spent more time on this I would have made the text look more professional and researched into specific dates.
Keeping in mind that I will change paths during the project means that I want to prioritise my time developing the project than creating the perfect brochure that is not going to be used for the final product.

It is easier to showcase how the brochure will look through an external site rather than getting it professionally printed and taking images in the studio, especially if it doesn’t look professional. This website made it easy to see how it will look like at with different angles.I like how the images are presented within the brochure, as they are showcasing what can be seen. If more research went into the developing of this then the text, placement and chosen imagery would look more professional. I don’t like how the ovals are overlapping, this is due to being unfamiliar with the software and prioritising my time with something more beneficial. Overall I think this was a good practice to use the images taken into a product and seeing how it looked. The printed version of this made it look more real which I and others liked.

Elsea Park Spinney

The Elsea Park Spinney is located very close to me, it isn’t very big but this meant that I had to search for the shots that I wanted to take. I wanted these to look unique; a theme of everyday objects we see but viewed in a different way. I used this to focus on close up shots using a macro lens which stands out to me.

Contact Sheets

Elsea Woods

Elsea Woods is located not very far from me. It’s a great place to escape for a nice walk, and to listen to nothing but wildlife. I wanted to find wildlife that you don’t often see such as deer and muntjacs, but this can be difficult as there is no guarantee that they will be spotted. If I knew I was going to somewhere like this regularly, then I would be a lot more patient for the outcomes.

Contact Sheet

Conclusions

I liked capturing images of nature and wildlife, especially as you don’t know what you are going to get. However, this is also a negative aspect of this as there are some shoots where I wasn’t happy with any of the images that I captured. If I knew that I had the time to go out to nature places frequently throughout the module I wouldn’t have mind so much about the images.
I felt like there was a short amount of time to; capture images I’m happy with, edit them and then decide how to make a commercial product out of it.
I created contact sheets as a way for me to pick out what shots I liked and to see the journey within a few pages. It’s a good way to show others too all at once. The small thumbnails helped me to determine what images I wanted to use for the brochure.Since taking these images, I communicated with others to see what they thought of these initial nature and wildlife shots. I also showed them previous images that I took in form of a photo album to showcase what I can do as a reference.
Many liked the images of the animals that I have previously took as I am good at “capturing their personality” which is useful to see in that perspective as I hadn’t viewed my images in that way. It was mentioned by my peers that from the images shown to them I have style that is recognisable to me and my work which is something I didn’t know within my current works. I took this what felt like a compliment which encouraged me to take this further.
From this reaction over the animals rather than the nature and landscapes it was clear to me that this was my stronger point which I want to pursue further.
I particularly liked the shots of the animals I took and they are appealing to me. From this I would like to take some more shots of animals that are guaranteed than by chance because of the short amount of time. I will go to animal parks and zoos to ensure that there are animals for me to capture and to play around with what angle and style I would like.
My initial ideas with animal photography is to create products that you would typically find in a gift shop, which also helps me decide on the audience and gives me an opportunity to create something unique compared to what we would usually see in a gift shop.
As I know that I want to go to places like zoos to capture images, I would like to dedicate my time to editing those images in more depth rather than these images. If I had some more time to complete the module I would definitely go back and learn some techniques that I can apply to images like these. I am using these initial wildlife images as an experiment of what I can capture around me.

Darkroom

Image Capture Using Objects

This session I learned how to use a darkroom and solutions.
I used objects placed on Photographic Paper.

At the start of the lesson, it was explained to us how to use the different solutions and how much to measure out. We measured out 3 trays of ‘paper and film fixer’ in varying quantities. After picking some natural objects from around the campus we were ready to start. We then set up the paper we were using and the lighting setup. We flashed the paper for 2-3 seconds to capture an image within the paper. After this the paper was submerged into the 3 different trays for 90 seconds, 30 seconds and finally 4 minutes, it was then rinsed out in a tray of water to rinse any solution left off.Following on from this, I can use the inverted image by photocopying the image and work onto it such as with paint pens, textures, watercolour.
If I had some more time I would work with these and apply them to products.

Image Capture Using Light

This session I learned how to use a darkroom and solutions.
I used objects on Photographic Paper and shone light at different angles.

I repeated the experiment a few more times changing small variables for each repeated print (such as using different lengths of the light, using other objects to create shadows and moving the light closer or further away).
I wanted to try and capture the detail within the leaves. The outcome shows that there is some detail that shown on the image.

Conclusions

Overall this session helped me to discover different paths that I can take within this unit. Throughout this session I have throughly enjoyed making these prints and learning a new skill to hopefully use in the future. I liked the outcome of the object image capture which I would definitely like to experiment with again (in the future). I didn’t like how the image capture with light turned out as much but I only touched on this so there’s definitely room to play around with this if I was to do it again.I thought a strength of these sheets is how I have used placement, particularly with the nature objects. I can visualise this developing to being on a nature cover or converting this to illustrations.A limitation of this is that there was no knowledge of this form of photography before the session, I feel like if I had some knowledge on the subject then I would have had stronger outcomes, in particular using light to create an effect I found it difficult to understand how this worked. If I had the opportunity to do this again, I would do some research beforehand and have an idea of what I wanted to create.

Studio

Still Life Photography

This session was to practice still life shots using prisms and experiment with lighting to change the effect of the image, and from this to create an advertisement.

In this session we were back in the studio. We started by setting up a black backdrop as we were using prisms. These were arranged in such a way that they mimicked a city skyline. From this it was decided that the lighting setup should be rearranged to create the effect of nighttime. During the session, our group experimented with different filters to see how different colours would affect our scene. As the session continued, we took some trial shots of how our scene would turn out. With some movements here and there we finally got our images.

After deciding our best images within photoshop we used skills from previous sessions such as layering and clone stamping. As a finish we decided to add a background of stars and apartments with some text in the foreground to make our poster come alive.

Layering Photos

This session was to experiment with layered photography using the studio and snapping objects in motion. After capturing the images, I used photoshop techniques to merge them together to create the layered photo.

After setting up the studio with the correct equipment and black background, we added two studio lights to ensure that there was no shadows. We then alternated between modelling and taking photos of each other. During the photoshoot, random objects were thrown into the air for effect so that we can merge these effects in Photoshop.

Within Photoshop, I imported the images that I wanted to use for the background and the foreground. The effect I wanted the final outcome to be is to look like a magician with floating objects around them. I selected a few object images and removed the background using blending options, then filtering through these options and chose ‘screen’. I then moved the images around until I was happy with the result.

Conclusions

Overall this was a great session in order to capture objects in motion and layering multiple images together. As well as to have some more practice using different effects on Photoshop that I was unfamiliar with.A limitation I felt for this exercise was my lack of knowledge of the camera settings and functions which is important when changing the mood of the image. Following on from this, I should have researched more about lighting and backdrops not have a better understanding of how and why they are used within photography.
Another setback I thought I had is my Photoshop skills. I have always struggled using Photoshop, so I have found an alternative to use for the module, Affinity Photo, using this also means that after I can potentially sell the images as I have used software that I paid for.
The studio setting was the perfect way to capture images that can be used to easily remove or edit the background. Adjusting the lighting continuously was a good way to see the effects that it had on the image. This helped me to understand using lighting on objects and people, and that it has power to change the mood on the image.

Research

What is Commercial Photography?

Commercial photography is photographic images that are used to sell, or to promote a product or service. This branches out to product, lifestyle, food, fashion photography, and many more! This type of photography doesn’t necessarily mean an item to be sold, it can also be a print up for sale.As my project has taken the path of animal photography I have been conducting research on what other photographers use their animal shots for and what consumers might like with animal shots. After taking the path of going to zoos, I liked the idea of using my images for gift shop products, as the setting fits in with the customer. I would also like to touch on external prints and books that are not limited to gift shops to appeal to a different type of consumer within the market.I want to use the commercial photography unit to further develop my work as a photographer. This will also give me the time to focus on a topic within this sector that I can make the most out of throughout the unit. By the end, I would like to successfully create a commercial product(s) that others can enjoy as much as I have created. After the unit I want to use the products by selling them to the public to show off my photographic skills, and to encourage me to delve into the world of photography that I never thought I would consider.

Artists

David Lloyd

“The picture is there, you just have to find it.” - David LloydI found David Lloyd’s photography website whilst I was looking for inspiration on how to lay out my Animal Photography website. After delving into his site I wish I found it earlier as It had given me great inspiration and motivation to go out and take some ecstatic shots of natures greatest animals.David Lloyd is a fine art wildlife photographer from New Zealand, now living in London. He first traveled to London in 1989 for a six month journey that is still continuing today.
He was inspired by Wildlife Photographer of the Year, to which he won in 2011 - ‘A Flick of the Tail’. He has had many other successes during his career such as: GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year in 2016, and the People’s Choice winner in the 2018 edition of Wildlife Photographer of the Year. He has also held exhibitions in galleries at London since 2013.
Lloyd likes the fine art style of his work, he wants his work to appeal to buyers of framed photography. He displays this in black and white, and colour prints.
With a number of old cameras, his favourite film camera as of 2023 is an all manual Olympus OM-1. He uses ‘Fujifilms X-H2s and X-H2 with two Nikon D850s together with an array of lenses for each ranging from 8mm to 600mm’.
He processes everything using Adobe Lightroom, rarely Photoshop which was surprising for me as I thought many professional photographers used this platform for their images.“I seek to create my pictures in camera, opting not to digitally alter my photos afterwards.”“My subjects therefore retain their natural realism within a singular moment in time which is the premise of a traditional photograph.”These quotes by Lloyd explains how he doesn’t misuse his photos or manipulate them in any way which I admire. These delicate phrases give off strong messages about how he feels for his work which gives off the connection between the artist and his work created.
I feel that with the work that I have created reflects this as I want to showcase what I saw and captured, not what I created within a programme. In some circumstances I consider this fake depending on the context. This does not however disregard the fact that artists should not be using these digital editors for their work.
His work stands out to me because of the detailed and unique animal shots that he has captured. When I look at his work I just want to stare at the complex image that we would often miss at a glance. I feel that any future works that I do will be heavily inspired by this photographer with the style of his work in mind when capturing the shot.

Tim Flach

I came across Tim Flach from his unique animal shots taken which reminded me of my previous works that I am happy with. I wanted to look into his work in depth to see how he captures his shots and how I can apply this to my works in the future.Tim Flach is known for his phenomenal photography skills of capturing animals to show their power and vulnerability.
Flach lives in London with his wife and son, he studied at University of the Arts London and is apart of the Royal Photographic society. His outstanding work has been exhibited world wide including museums of natural history to award winning books. He has dedicated his career to being an animal photographer that documents biodiversity and highlighting our endangered species. His work naturally gives us a sense of empathy towards the animals and may inspire individuals to do their part to help animals like these.
His work caught my eye as I feel like the style relates to works I have done in the past. I like to create work that I find eye catching to capture the audience’s attention which is what Flach does really well here.Throughout my photographic work of animals, I will be referring to Flachs’ work as a reference and to experiment with styles that he uses.

Jasper Goodall

I decided to look into Jaspers work initially earlier on in the topic as his work particularly stood out to me because of his unique nature shots. They made me stop and think which is what I would like to portray within my work, but in a different way that I will be exploring within my creative journey.Jasper Goodall, born in Birmingham 1973 studied at University of Brighton, and graduated in 1995 with Ba Illustration degree.
He became known through his illustration work and magazine covers in the early 2000’s. From 2014 he used his creative mind but used photography as a medium and started to capture images at night.
“I want to bring a sense of unfamiliarity into the images“ - Jasper GoodallThis quote stood out to me because it explains in his words what I have thought about my photography work in the past. I wanted to carry this through the topic by bringing something that we see everyday but at a different level, such as a macro perspective. This sort of work stands out to me the most which is why I want to use this within my work.

Books

Throughout this project I brought some photography books that caught my eye that I have used throughout the project. Having the reading material in front of me and flicking through the pages gives off a different experience of research which I quite enjoyed, and easier whilst I played around with the images on my iPad. Here are my opinions of the reading material:The Digital Photography Book: 1, 3, 4This series of books have been very useful to me when conducting my research throughout this topic. I am more of a visual learner which these books provide, this helps me to understand the content better and is more visually appealing for me to take in.These books contain almost everything you would like to know about photography and more! They are very informative and cover a wide range of topics that wouldn’t be what you would think of. Each contain chapters and refine each section to take in manageable doses. I like that there are separate books to the series as it makes the information more manageable to take in and even if you get one it’s good to get a sense of the book before getting the collection.I have used these books throughout my journey within the project as a reference and a guide on how to make my images better and to getting to know my camera more. I will definitely be using these books again in the near future as they are very useful, and to try out different camera features and techniques that I didn't get to try during this project.Digital Close-Up Photography Q&AThis book stood out to me because I have recently had a keen interest in macro photography. I have recently brought a phone with a macro lens to try out different brands and for the ease when going out on shoots. I wanted a greater insight into this branch of photography, as I have only touched on the subject.I liked how the book was presented, literally a Q & A format which made it easier to understand the answer to the question and refer back to. It is easy to understand and explains in depth about the different areas within macro photography which is really useful to know. It answers questions that I wouldn’t have considered when searching for something on the web. Definitely a recommended book for macro beginners for hints and tips!I would have delved into this path for the project but I was worried of the risk of outcomes for the final products that they wouldn’t be strong enough. I wanted to choose something I was more comfortable with within the short amount of time of the project. If I had more time I would have definitely gone out on some shoots specifically for macro photography and got to know the subject more. It is definitely something I want to do in the future with my photography career.Design PrinciplesI picked up this book because I feel that it is very important to get the design of an image right and to have an understanding of placement. I wanted to have a greater understanding of placement in the image as I have reflected on this being something I work on.The book is grouped off into multiple sections and broken down into categories. This layout makes the book manageable to read and easy to refer back to. The topics have been very useful to me throughout my photography journey and has shaped the outcome of my images. Even if I have already read about a topic in another book, it was good to have a refresher again but from a different viewpoint using alternative language. With images I have captured in the past, I know I haven’t thought much about the design before taking the shot especially until after taking it and realising I should have done it at a slightly different angle. I wanted to use this project as an opportunity to experiment with the camera and learn it more than just pressing a button. This is why research is just as important as taking an image as it backs up the process when you have more of an understanding of a topic.Tate Modern HighlightsI brought this book when I went to London Oct ‘23 as a day out to help towards my current projects. I went to the Tate to view artworks and to view how pieces are presented within the space. I didn’t see many photography pieces but it was a good experience to see different works as a break from what I’ve been working on recently. I used this opportunity to view the different layouts of the pieces that I could potentially use within my work. I enjoyed viewing the large scale pieces, I think that this could work really well with my work too as well as playing around with the scales and slicing the images.
I also used this opportunity to look around the gift shop with the idea of doing gift shop products towards the project. Despite the type of shop it was and the contrast in target market, It was good to get an insight of similarities and differences within the type of product and inspiration if I do this in the future.

Websites

Throughout the topic I have been looking at various websites to get inspiration for my creative journey with the commercial photography unit. I have been looking at various articles at wildlife and animal photography in particular which led me to choosing the artists above to explore.YouTube has been a great resource for tutorials such as using Photoshop as I struggle to use this. It is good to see how different individuals use the tools to create their final piece. After the darkroom session I looked into how the solutions worked with the paper, and the measurements so that I could record them down.I have looked throughout the London zoo website to see their terms and conditions of taking images of the animals within their premises. They have not stated that photography is not allowed, as they have very much welcomed film crews in the past. If I had more time to prepare for visits like this I would have conducted a formal email stating that I am a student carrying out a project which may have resulted in them providing with extra support. Furthermore, in the near future I may contact them regarding a form of collaboration with the images I captured.
There can be issues if rules are not followed such as taking images and using them as commercial use as explained below. It is important to check what each zoo says within their terms to stick with their rules.
I also looked at Hamerton Zoo photography rules before going to see if there was any limitations. There was no limitations stated on their website which meant that I could freely capture stunning images whilst sticking to the public path and respecting the animals by following the rules of ethics within animal photography. If there was any and I still took some then they would be for educational use only through the Open University through University Centre Peterborough.
Like London Zoo, I may contact Hamerton Zoo in the near future for a collaboration to put my images to greater use for the public.
After editing photos, I wanted to research into ways to export an image and how it will affect printing. I have exported some images in a: TIFF, PNG, PDF, and JPEG format to see how they turn out. This research led me to looking into the ways the printer works, such as if an image should be printed black and white it needs to be checked that the image itself is set to greyscale as the printer would try to find colour within the image.Since taking images of animals and looking at other photographers work, it has inspired me to create a photography book showcasing the animals that I am proud to have taken an image of. This is a more professional way of showcasing my work as a photographer as a side product for an audience that wouldn’t buy accessories at a gift shop, but a book like this could also be shown at a gift shop to capture the attention of a different demographic.
I have been doing in depth research into multiple photo book websites that are not too expensive as I would like this to be a valuable piece to my professional photography profile.
I have been looking into gift shop product ideas to help with what commercial products I should have by the end of the unit. I looked into current gift shops online and in store such as London Zoo to see what I would like to adapt or what I think would fit within the space. (Primary Images)

This was a good start with how I want to create my commercial gift shop products using the images that I captured. If I had more time for this project I would love to go more in depth of the products - and to potentially sell them.
I also do not want to limit myself to this style of commercial product so I am keeping an open mind so that I am not restricted to this idea.

Ethical Considerations within Photography

Photographic images are a very powerful source that can be used positively or negatively. There are many ethical considerations within photography, such as consent and not doing any form of harm. Photographers should look into the Human Rights Act 1998 before considering taking any imagery of humans and using this to post socially or for commercial use. Imagery can be used as a position of exploitation or manipulation if it is used wrongly which is why it is important to know the ethical issues and current laws that evolve around photography. We may take photos that could give off mixed messages to viewers without noticing. Reasons behind this could be key details that are or are not included within the photo, or if the subjects are happy for it to be shared. The ongoing development of the digital age has increased the ethical issues of photography. We now have the ongoing development of social media where images can quickly be shared and duplicated. Photojournalism has increased issues recently within the media with their mass audiences who have the power to reproduce the image and to potentially adapt it to exaggerate what is being shown.
When capturing images of humans, it is very important to get their formal consent before taking the image. Paparazzi break these rules towards celebrities causing issues with GDPR and consent as they are constantly snapping images in front of them.
Wildlife photography has ethical aspects that need to be thought about before going out on a shoot, it can affect an images outcome particularly if it is released to the media. One of the most important aspects of wildlife photography is to not disturb the animals in any way like the shot is being staged. This is because there is potential to cause the animal stress and use its energy. There have been some cases in the media where images taken have been unethical which frowned upon. This is important to look into before going out and taking images that might seem okay, even the camera shutter making sounds could be distressing to animals.Editing existing images is a common issues that photographers face regularly, as most individuals have a device in their inventory that can most likely edit an image to how they would like and claiming rights that shouldn’t be claimed. Editing to encourage photo manipulation reflects to many ethical issues that can result in affecting another individual negatively, or even a culture.
On the other hand, photographers use editing in a brighter light to improve their image such as for a product to sell well. In some cases, editing is used to exaggerate a product. Like photography, this is a very powerful source that can hold many messages that are explicit and should only be used in the right forms.
After researching through the ethical considerations within photography, I know to be careful with anything I take from private property to how someone’s identity can be exposed. I never realised how powerful an image is, and the dramatic effects it can cause if it is used in a negative manner.
Within my work I have been considering the wildlife side of ethics in particular so that I do not go out of line. Through the locations, I have ensured that they are of public access, and researching into the different types of wildlife so that I do not disturb them.
I have also looked at websites of the zoo as there can be some issues with photography at the zoo. I have thoroughly checked through their websites before attending the location.
In the near future, I would like to use the products from this project and develop them further by selling them. If I do this then I will contact these companies if I will be making a profit. Following on from this I may consider to collaborate with them to use my images to sell products in their store.

Research Conclusions

Following on from researching into photo books, I have taken part in sessions and ordered sample packs of different paper types as I want this book to be perfect. After looking into these, I found that I liked photographic paper as it’s a smooth texture, and for some images semigloss photographic paper. There are many ways to mount photographic images into a wall or to display. Framing an image is the most typical way of featuring an image within a living space, but I wanted to take this further. Such as mounting it into a 3D surface as a photo tile on foamex board or onto glass.I want the overall products at the end to be suitable for a gift shop (like London Zoo) and to create a ‘collections’ that would be appealing to my audience. I will try out having an item but changing the image so that there’s a range of animals to choose from. After conducting research on sizing it inspired me to print some images out at different sizes and/or greyscale to see the effects it has. I tried it out on one of my favourite tiger shots, and this made me realise that this image would look very effective if it was printed at a larger scale to show off all the details. However, this also shows some of the imperfections on the camera such as around the whiskers there’s a slight colour difference, but this could be due to the distance and because it was behind glass.Once I have finished this module I want to carry out some research on how to display my images in the public eye to get my name out. I don’t want the deadline for this project to mean that I’ve finished this part of my professional Photography. I want it to be a stepping stone for what I can do in the future.
